About Colombia Nuevo Horizonte Pink Bourbon

      SOLD OUT.

This coffee just arrived at our warehouse at the end of August 2024 in lined bags.

Finca Nuevo Horizonte is located in Santa María, Huila, Colombia and is managed by Elmer Sarmiento, a 44-year-old third generation coffee grower. The farm spans 2.5 hectares at an elevation of 2,000 meters above sea level. With over 7,000 coffee trees, Elmer is best known for the exceptional Pink Bourbon that he cultivates, but he also grows Colombia and Caturra varieties and is now beginning to plant some Chiroso trees. There are several color varieties of Bourbon - red, yellow, orange and pink. Bourbons are known for their sweetness and were the most awarded variety in coffee competitions until recently when that distinction was overtaken by the far more expensive Geisha variety coffees. Thus, nice Bourbons, present a good value.

Elmer’s processing method is straightforward. After harvesting, the cherries are left in bags for 24 hours before being depulped - the removal of its outer skin. The mucilage encased beans are then placed in sealed plastic barrels for up to 80 hours, where they are left to rest while being submerged in water. That acts to remove some mucilage. Finally, after rinsing, the coffee is dried on raised beds for 15 to 18 days, depending on the weather.

Growing up surrounded by coffee traditions, Elmer has always been immersed in the coffee world since a young age. In a region with limited opportunities, he turned to coffee to rise above his circumstances. In 2004, he was able to purchase Finca Nuevo Horizonte with a loan, repaying it with the profits from each crop season. For Elmer, the farm represented, as its name implies, a “New Horizon,” offering opportunities for him and his family.

The lush landscape at Finca Nuevo Horizonte

The quality of Nuevo Horizonte has consistently met high standards, and it continues to expand through the producer's toil. We attempted to purchase this coffee last season, but its small quantity was sold quickly. This year we were only able to purchase two bags and are pleased to offer them at this time.

In the early 18th century, Bourbon coffee was brought by French clergymen from Yemen to the island of Bourbon, known today as La Réunion, which led to the naming of the coffee variety. For many years, the Bourbon variety remained exclusively on the island, not venturing beyond until the mid-1800s. During this period, as missionaries expanded their presence into Africa and the Americas, Bourbon began its journey across the globe. It was around 1860 when Brazil first welcomed the Bourbon variety, and it swiftly moved northward, becoming a staple in various regions of South and Central America, where its cultivation continues to this day.

Cup Characteristics: Very floral notes when ground becoming like orange blossom and expanding. Sweet flavors of tamarind, brown butter and florals. Nice lively grapefruit finish.

Roasting Notes: This is a durable bean that can withstand roasting past 2nd crack but the more delicate sweetness and acidity are most pronounced when roasted to Full City, terminating the roast prior to any substantial 2nd crack.
